The Hook
How attention is caught and held — variable rewards, removed stopping cues, and the deceptive choice architecture catalogued as “dark patterns.”
The Hook turns a vulnerability into a behavior. Its job is to capture attention and convert it — into a click, a sign-up, a purchase, a share — and then to bring you back.
Unpredictable rewards
Variable-ratio reinforcement (Ferster & Skinner, 1957) produces high, steady, extinction-resistant behavior — the engine of the slot machine and, by analogy, the feed that might have something new each pull. Natasha Dow Schüll’s Addiction by Design (2012) documents how machines are engineered to maximize “time on device,” a direct line to infinite scroll.
Guardrail: the claim that variable rewards cause pathological gambling is contested, and the “dopamine hit” story is an oversimplification — dopamine mainly encodes reward prediction, not simple pleasure.
Deceptive choice architecture
Choice architecture can help (a nudge) or harm (sludge — friction that makes the better outcome harder; Thaler & Sunstein). At the harmful end sit dark patterns, named by Harry Brignull in 2010 and mapped by researchers into taxonomies:
- Gray et al. (2018): nagging, obstruction, sneaking, interface interference, forced action.
- Mathur et al. (2019): a crawl of ~11K shopping sites found 1,818 dark-pattern instances across 15 types — and 22 third-party vendors selling them as a service.
The keystone evidence
The single most citable causal anchor is Luguri & Strahilevitz (2021): in a randomized experiment of ~5,740 people, mild dark patterns more than doubled acceptance of an unwanted program (11.3% → 25.8%) and aggressive ones nearly quadrupled it (→ 41.9%). A double-negative trick question raised acceptance from 19.2% to 33.4%, and less-educated participants were significantly more vulnerable — an equity dimension worth naming.
Industry “how-to” models like Nir Eyal’s Hooked (Trigger → Action → Variable Reward → Investment) and B.J. Fogg’s Behavior Model describe what designers intend — useful as primary sources of intent, not as independent proof of harm.

Tactics at this stage
Confirmshaming & trick questions
The decline option is worded to shame you (‘No thanks, I don’t want to save money’) or phrased as a confusing double negative, so the easy, dignified path is to consent. It exploits the friction of re-reading and the social sting of the framing.
Countdown timers & low-stock urgency
An artificial deadline or ‘almost sold out’ message manufactures urgency, pushing you to act on impulse (System 1) before deliberating — and the fear of missing out leans on loss aversion. Many such timers reset on refresh or are entirely fabricated.
Idealized & filtered imagery
The feed’s hook is a stream of bodies and lives edited toward an unattainable ideal — professionally shot, filtered, AR-augmented, or outright synthetic. Because we compare upward against whatever is in front of us, a diet of idealised images quietly resets ‘normal’ and erodes satisfaction with one’s own face and body. The comparison keeps you scrolling, and the dissatisfaction keeps you coming back.
Infinite scroll & removed stopping cues
The feed never ends and the next item loads automatically, so there is no natural ‘stopping cue’ — the small moment where you’d decide whether to continue. Combined with unpredictable rewards, it keeps you scrolling past the point you meant to stop.
Passive feed comparison
Endless, low-effort consumption — scrolling without posting or interacting — maximises exposure to other people’s curated lives while giving you nothing back. This ‘passive use’ is the mode most consistently linked to feeling worse, because it is pure upward comparison plus fear of missing out, with none of the connection that active interaction can provide. The design goal is time-on-feed; the by-product is a slow erosion of how you feel about your own life.
