Passive feed comparison

Endless, low-effort consumption — scrolling without posting or interacting — maximises exposure to other people’s curated lives while giving you nothing back. This ‘passive use’ is the mode most consistently linked to feeling worse, because it is pure upward comparison plus fear of missing out, with none of the connection that active interaction can provide. The design goal is time-on-feed; the by-product is a slow erosion of how you feel about your own life.

Comparing oneself to people who appear better off (upward comparison) tends to depress self-evaluation, while downward comparison tends to lift it. On curated feeds — which over-represent others’ best moments — exposure skews upward. The directional pattern is well-supported, but reported effect sizes on mood and self-esteem are modest and vary by who is studied and how use is measured.

Fear of missing out (FOMO)

The 2013 paper introduced a validated FOMO scale and found FOMO correlates with lower mood and life satisfaction and with heavier social-media engagement. The construct and its associations replicate reasonably well, but the evidence is largely cross-sectional and correlational — causal direction (does FOMO drive use, or use stoke FOMO?) is not settled.

Social comparison

The core drive — people evaluate their own abilities and opinions by comparing themselves to others, especially when objective standards are absent — is one of social psychology’s most durable findings. What is robust is the existence of the drive; the direction and magnitude of its effects (who we compare to, and whether it lifts or lowers us) are strongly context-dependent, which is where the social-media literature gets genuinely contested.

Habitual Facebook use was associated with lower self-esteem, mediated by greater exposure to upward social comparisons; experimental exposure to an upward-comparison profile lowered state self-esteem. Modest, much-debated effect sizes — ‘mixed’.

Reviews evidence that passive use (consuming without interacting) tends to undermine well-being, partly via envy and upward comparison, whereas active use can support it. A synthesis of mostly correlational and small experimental studies.
“The association between adolescent well-being and digital technology use”
Nature Human Behaviour 3, 173–182
Using specification-curve analysis across three large datasets (>355,000 adolescents), the association between digital-technology use and well-being was tiny and negative — on the order of 0.4% of the variance, comparable to the ‘harm’ of wearing glasses. The popular ‘screens are destroying teens’ claim is genuinely contested, and we rate it so.
